Guatemala, compared to other countries especially its northern neighbor, might never be considered as a mecca for street food. But if one knows the country well, there is no shortage of delectable food sold in markets, street corners and tiny restaurants across the country.
To me corn tortillas, fried chicken and fries hold the top three positions in Guatemala’s street food pantheon.
After that, in no particular order, are tostadas, pizza, mosh for breakfast, tamales, fresh cut fruit, fried pork, grilled corn, pupusas, sausages, cheese, and desserts that included meringues and molletes.
Tortilla, without doubt is the staple diet. Every town, restaurant and street vendor sold the white or blue tortillas. Eaten with with basic salt/lime combination to myriad toppings it is hard not to love the handmade tortillas. The best tortillas I had where at Chichicastenango market and Huehuetenango.
During my travel in the country the town that seemed to have the biggest love for fried chicken and fries was Solola. At its town fair, I once counted no less than 10 stands jostled next to each other selling the same thing. Incredibly all seemed to have a robust sale.
